Dorna once again showed the way to cover Grand Prix motorcycle racing with their live coverage of this years South African GP at the Phakisa Freeway.
As host broadcaster for the South African Grand Prix, Dorna made good use of the latest digital technology in the Pit Lane. This year Dorna also introduced, for the first time, a new data link from selected bikes. Using a graphical interface, this data can be displayed on screen to enhance the on-board camera footage.

One particularly interesting shot was the riders foot on the gear change lever coupled with a graphic showing the actual gear that the rider had selected.

Hola! Valencia 2004

This year, Alfacam are also using Gigawave digital microwave links to transmit live on-board camera pictures direct to a terrestrial receive site. and then to Alfacam's digital OB truck. This eliminates the need for a helicopter or any other kind of mid-point relay, the test at Valencia clearly demonstrating the performance and reliability of the equipment.
