Snapshots of Euro 2004
The extensive news coverage of Euro 2004 was not just limited to the games themselves. News crews from around the world were all anxious to capture the mood of the thousands of fans who filled the streets of Lisbon and other Portuguese cities.

Euro 2004 Makes the News
ITN, one of the largest news organisations in the world used a D-Cam 'Clip-on' wireless camera system hooked into one of their SNG truck to provide live news coverage and interviews from Euro 2004.

According to ITN Outside Broadcasts Engineering Manager, Donald Begg,

"The D-Cam 'Clip-on' made our coverage of Euro 2004 so much easier. With matches being held in different stadiums all over Portugal, flexibility was a key issue, and the D-Cam 'Clip-on' It meant that we could set up and go live in a very short time.

In the car park behind the stadium in Coimbra, we bumped into Bobby Robson and asked him for an interview. He agreed on the condition that we did it there and then. If we had needed to run cables we would have missed out on the interview.
At the 'Estádio da Luz' in Lisbon we set our SNG truck up outside the stadium. From here we were able to receive perfect pictures of our presenter, Tim Ewart, from anywhere in the stadium using 16QAM low delay Intraslice mode!

I particularly like the Intra-slice mode! On those odd occasions when a digital link breaks up I think that the way intra-slice modulation recovers is much more acceptable than conventional MPEG."

The above photo shows Donald Begg (Right) with fellow engineer, aptly named Rob Robinson, outside the 'Estádio da Luz'.

Designed for Champions!
The Singapore Turf Club racecourse at Kranji is designed for champions. The best features from leading racecourses around the world have been incorporated into its design.
In the circumstances, it was no coincidence that a D-Cam wireless camera system was chosen to cover this years 'Patron's Bowl', one of the classic races to be held each year in the region. Like the Singapore racecourse, the D-Cam was designed to be the best.

D-Cam Day Celebrations!
ITN's live coverage of the celebrations to mark the 60th Anniversary of the D-Day landings in Brittany was a major outside broadcast by any standards. The series of special programmes, over the weekend of 05/06 June, were produced by ITN on behalf of the ITV Network.
On Saturday Mark Austin presented a special programme from the Pegasus Bridge cafe. The Pegasus Bridge, spanning the Orne Canal was captured by British 6th Airborne Division glider troops in the first few minutes of D-day, and the cafe used to treat casualties.

One of the D-Cam's was at Pegasus Bridge to cover ITN presenter Mary Nightingale, whilst a second D-Cam was used to transmit live pictures from the 'MV Van Gough', a cruise ship moored approximately 12 miles out to sea!

Pictures from the D-cam aboard the MV Van Gough were received at the ferry port of Ouistreham, 15 km north of Caen, whilst a further two D-Cams were used to cover the official opening, by Prince Charles, of a new
garden at the Peace Museum, in Caen.
On Sunday 06 June, Trevor Macdonald presented a programme from a terrace overlooking the bay of Arromanches-les-Bains and the remains of one of the famous Mulberry Harbours. These were prefabricated floating harbours that the Allies towed from England and sunk off the Normandy coast after their D-Day landings.

Down in the town square of Arromanches, one of the four D-Cam's was used to cover ITN's anchor man Mark Austin, whilst a second D-Cam was located in a flat overlooking the activities in the square below.

in the bay of Arromanches, a third D-Cam was used to transmit live pictures from a landing craft used as part of a re-enactment of the landings there sixty years previously, whilst the fourth D-cam was used to provide coverage from Ranville War Cemetery where 2151 British soldiers are buried.

Broadcast Asia a 'Great Success'
Commenting at the close of this year's Broadcast Asia exhibition, Gigawave's Sales and Marketing Director, Simon Clifford, hailed the show, Gigawave's first in Asia, a great success.

"By exhibiting at Broadcast Asia, we were keen to demonstrate to both our existing clients and potential customers our long term commitment to this region. Beijing Motor Show
With the market for new cars in China growing at a rate of 30% per annum the world's leading car makers have been vying for space at the seventh Beijing Motor Show - Auto China 2004.
TWS Asia limited worked in conjunction with its partner Hiller Pharma to provide 3 D-Cam Clip-on wireless camera systems for the show. Two of the systems were mounted on steadicam units, whilst the 3rd system was used with a camcorder that was used both hand held and tripod mounted.

The requirement for the systems were to provide coverage for the Mazda, Ford, Jaguar and Landrover stands, capturing the opening ceremony, press
conference and stage shows. The pictures were fed live to the LED wallscreens situated around the exhibition halls, and were also recorded.
According to TWS Asia, the use of Gigawave digital wireless camera systems allowed their clients considerably more flexibility then had been the case in the past with traditional triax systems. In particular the use of wireless cameras meant that the camera teams could operate in public areas without the risk of stand personnel and visitors tripping over cables.

Olympic Torch Arrives in Beijing
The Olympic torch arrived in Beijing early on June 8, on the fifth stop of the first truly global relay in the Olympic history. The Olympic flame arrived in China aboard a specially chartered jumbo jet festooned in Olympic colours.
Beijing TV (BTV) covered the event using four D-Cam wireless camera systems . When the first torchbearer left the north gate of the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing to set out along the relay route through the streets of Beijing the first D-Cam, aboard a tracking vehicle, provided live coverage of the historic event,.

A second D-Cam covered the University leg of the relay route, whilst a third covered the Asian Games Village. A final D-Cam covered the last leg of it’s journey through the Summer Palace park. This included a section where the torch was carried on a traditional Chinese ferry boat to finish its journey on an elaborate stage built in the middle of a lake.
The flame travelled a total of 55 kilometres, passing a host of icons of modern and historic Beijing such as the Tian’anmen Square, the Forbidden City, Wangfujing business area, China World Trade Center and two prestigious Beijing universities, showcasing Beijing’s resplendent culture as well as its metropolitan charm.

The relay ended at the Summer Palace, where the last torchbearer, Chinese basketball player Yao Ming, who was selected by the Chinese Olympic Committee, ignited a ceremonial cauldron. A celebration gala show concluded the two-day event.
