Sir Bu Na'air Race Goes Digital
Each May around one hundred 60' traditional arab dhows gather to race the 50nm from a small island in the Arabian Gulf called Sir Bu Na'air to Dubai. It is a magnificent sight as the crew manually raise the enormous 'Lateen Rig' sail and set course for Dubai.
Each year the Sir Bu Na'air Race, the highlight of the season, is covered by Dubai TV's Outside Broadcast Department and broadcast live in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other Gulf countries. Since 1991 Dubai TV have been covering the race using analogue microwave links. This year they used five Gigawave MTV-D digital transmitters with MVL-D receivers.

Covering a sailing boat race of this size and distance is not without its problems. Primary coverage of the race involves the use of two helicopters and three chase boats. Pictures from these are linked by microwave link to the OB Truck, which follows the race aboard a 54 metre landing craft. Apart from the finish of the race, the entire programme is produced afloat and beamed back to Dubai TV using digital microwave links.

A detailed description of how Dubai TV cover the Sir Bu Na'air race will be published in our 'Specialist Applications' shortly.

Pit-lane D-Cam Covers Schumacher Fire - Live!
Not even flames from a faulty refuelling rig could prevent the ice-cool world champion from winning at the A1-Ring for a second consecutive year.
The race had gone smoothly for the world champion had until lap 23 when Schumacher, with a lead of almost four seconds, pitted for fuel. An earlier fault with the refuelling equipment when Barrichello pitted meant that the Ferrari team used a replacement rig for the German. With only five seconds' worth of fuel funnelled into the car, the nozzle burst into flames and mechanics had to get to work with the extinguishers.

As millions of Formula One fans around the world watched in horror a D-Cam digital wireless camera system was there to cover the action - live! Fortunately, the flames were soon extinguished by vigilent Ferrari team members and Schumacher rejoined the race with less then his full quota of fuel.

Whilst a D-Cam was covering the action in the Pit-lane, a Gigawave MTV-D digital link was beaming live pictures of the race from a camera helicopter to the OB Truck. Both the D-Cam and the MTV-D were supplied to ORF Sport the host broadcaster by Total World Sports.

UEFA Champions League
Andriy Shevchenko struck in first-half injury-time to score the vital away goal in the Italian derby at the San Siro. Despite Inter Milan scoring an equaliser late on AC Milan go through on away goals. AC Milan face Juventus in an all Italian final on 28 May.
D-Cam wireless camera systems has now been used in three out of the four semi-final ties and Mediaset are planning to take a D-Cam with them to UEFA 'Champions League' final at Old Trafford on 28 May.

Mediaset have been using the D-Cam for their live coverage of the UEFA 'Champions League' and other sporting events since taking delivery of the D-Cam earlier this year and are as delighted with the performance of the wireless camera system as they are with the Italian teams.

According to Luigi Ferro, a senior engineer with Mediaset, " The D-Cam has given our directors a freedom to use wireless cameras in a way that was never possible before. The quality and performance of the D-Cam is such that it is easy to forget that the camera is not using triax."

D-Cam wireless cameras have become a familiar site on the touch-line at football matches this season. The exceptionally rugged RF output of the D-Cam matched with the sensitivity of the MVL-D receiver allows the cameraman freedom to go anywhere in the stadium without using diversity of reception. It also allows the cameraman to follow the players through the tunnel and into the dressing room.
