Headed by Fenton Yeulett, the Gigawave Special Projects Team acts as an interface between the sales
team, design and development, and the customer whenever an order includes
non-standard products and services. The Special Projects Team is also
responsible for product demonstrations, site surveys, installations, and
training, where required.
Gigawave Special Projects engineers all have extensive operational experience and are often called upon to provide operational support to customers on an extended basis. As guarantee engineers they build up a special relationship with the customer that provides essential feedback between the user and the manufacturer.
Often the Special Projects Team are called in at the enquiry stage to give product demonstrations to customers. They are also used to carry out detailed site surveys to ensure that a proposed system will fulfil the customers requirements. Typical site surveys include measurements, path loss calculations, and taking photographs with a digital camera.
Once an enquiry for a non-standard product and/or system becomes an order, the Special Projects Team will normally work alongside the Design and Development Team during the production phase. However, some projects are entrusted to specialist engineers within the Special Projects Team.
Another important project that involved special project engineers is the
installation of a GPS auto-tracking antenna system and digital downlink
on the Sky News helicopter.
The project also involved the installation and commissioning of a new
fully automatic ground receive site in Central London. Gigawave engineers
were also involved in the live coverage of the 2003
Wales RallyGB, using digital links.
One of the largest 'turnkey' projects that the Special Projects Team
have been involved in is a system to provide an integrated
'Command and Control' system for Government Flying Services in Hong
Kong. This involved two Gigawave engineers spending six weeks on site
installing, commissioning and training GFS personnel. Since then, the
Special Projects Team have been responsible for implementing a number of major
upgrades to the original system
One of the most important functions of the Special Projects Team is to
run product training courses at the Gigawave Technical Centre and to provide
customers with on-site training, as required. These courses also help
to develop an on-going relationship between the Special Projects Team
and the customer. |
